What are Strawberries?
Strawberries are a type of perennial plant known for their bright, red coloring and strikingly sweet taste. The plant produces runners as it grows, branching off into daughter plants that create more strawberries. While the beloved fruit can be found in different varieties worldwide, the most common one today is the Garden strawberry which is actually a hybrid of the European strawberry with South America’s. This fusion occurred in the 1700’s and lives on today.
Strawberries have a long running history as a decadent fruit that makes for a favorite snack. In the ancient past, strawberries were only eaten by royalty and newlyweds were entitled to the berry at their first breakfast together with soured cream. In Roman mythology, strawberries were a symbol for Venus, Goddess of Love, because of their apparent heart shape and bold red color. The recipe for strawberry shortcake was passed on from Native Americans who baked strawberries into cornmeal for a sweet treat!
